They surprise you. Tonight my other, separated half offered to loan me some money so I can buy a car. I was stunned. Not a new car, not even a newer car, but one I've been looking at for three days now, and in better condition and less miles than what I'm driving now.

This came in the midst of my attempt to install a new fan and light fixture in the bathroom at the house. Two days and a small mountain of insulation falling down from the hole in the ceiling later, it's in. And naturally when switched on, it flips the breaker off 'cause I got the wiring wrong. A phone call to the manufacturer tomorrow should set me back on the golden path. I hope. Not only am I not Bob Vila, I'm the guy all the salespeople at Sears run away from when I start looking at the power tools.

Anyway, despite having exchanged one non-working fan and working light for another non-working fan with a non-working light, she still offers to front me the money. To her credit she knows why I need to accelerate my search for more reliable transportation: my brother's army reserve unit got activated. He doesn't know precisely when he's going, but it is sooner than later. I've not seen him in a while, so I have to get out to see him.

So by week's end I hope to have a new car, planned time off to go see my brother, notice to my kids' schools that they will be out an up-coming Friday and Monday, and a working fan and light back at the house. Oh, and a ton of stuff done at work. We shall see.

My trip to Atlanta was mixed. You could have hung meat in the plane on the flight down it was so cold. And dry. By Sunday I had flu symptoms and was totally congested. Spent the rest of the week fighting what looked liked a sinus infection. I need to get to my doctor's tomorrow to get checked, I suppose. The class was long, boring, and maybe 25% of it actually applied to my job. Maybe it's just me, and maybe I'm getting overly depressed and cynical again, but I think this project is going to suck hard. I would be happy to be demonstrated to be incorrect about that.

Work will consist of configuring the AIX, apache, and writing a few scripts to automate some of the tasks that the software vendor wasnt' competent or ethical enough to proved (after all if they had, they couldn't wack companies two grand per attendee to go to their training). Oh, and policies. Lots of policies. Lots of undoubtedly unpopular polices. But that's the way it goes. I don't give-up the root password unless you've got a policy that says I have to, what for, and who's accountable if it hits the fan after I do so.
