I've been very hit-and-miss about doing new year's resolutions, and even more hit-and-miss about keeping them. More like miss-and-give-up. 2008 has to be different.

1. I resolve that this new year will be the last new year I will have to resolve to finish my divorce.

2. Get a new, full-time job. Preferably in my field, making using of my skills and experience.

3. Sell the house.

4. Find a new girlfriend. Or, have a new girlfriend find me, I'm all for a girlfriend with initiative.

While it's my priority for the year, the divorce will recommence in February. First, 'cause the last hearing in my court case is January 16th. My opponent's attorney has, to no surprise, motioned for the court to make me pay his legal fees. I have my objection mostly done, I'll post it after I file it later this week. And second, I want to get the income tax return filed and settled before we file the divorce papers, so that will be one less thing to worry about.

My second resolution is the most immediate. I currently have 7 resumes out there now: 2 at hospitals, 3 at software companies, 1 at a manufacturing company, and one I don't know about, as the headhunter didn't include the industry in with the posting. With any luck, at least one of these companies will contact me later this week or next.

The third resolution is highly dependant on getting the first one done, and will probably be the most problematic. At least I hope that's how it will play out, or I'll be in real trouble.

The fourth, while not exactly vital, is still more than just a nice-to-have. I am going to follow the advice of a friend and not be overtly looking for this, just hoping it will happen and be smart enough to let it if it does.

I have a bunch of secondary resolutions too: Do another vacation with my kids. Go to the Dakotas this summer and spend a week digging up dinosaur bones. Get a passport. Visit Canada. Do a better budget and stick to it, including saving way more money that I ever have before. Help Brandon more with College. Move out of this trailer and find a place where my kids will have more room. Write a useful utility program in C and post it to sourceforge. Take another class in German. See a play, preferably Shakespeare (I used to do this at least once a year, long, long ago). Get out more for live music. Learn to drive in Boston without a map. Get a Mac laptop. Take my kids to the Revolutionary War memorial in Concord and to the Bunker Hill Museum. Get to the New Hampshire Highland Games this year--and maybe take Sam if she's at all interested. Go to a Renn Faire again.

There's more, but that's what I can think of now.

Then there's the impossible list:

Reconnect with Michael. Travel to Scotland. Go to Baltimore on January 19th and toast Poe. Vist my family in Ohio in the summer and at Thanksgiving. Travel to California (I've never been). Travel to Germany after I've learned enough of the language to be able to get around and not feel foolish. Visit the child I sponsor in Honduras. Write a book. Learn to swim.

So, Happy New Year, best of luck to all with their resolutions. See you back here next year for the recap.
