I sometimes write about my son, Daniel, who was born very premature. Consequently, articles in the news about new developments in the care of premature babies generally catch my eye. Today, The NY Times has an article on premature babies and a new method for calculating the factors for their survival. I'm still undecided if this is mere convenience or really good, concise science.

The calculator is sponsored by The National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, and you can try the actual calculator here. Use these values for the form: 23 weeks, 878 grams, male, yes, no. You can then see the percentages that my son beat to be able to be here today. I am still amazed and grateful.
