Into the Woods
May. 23rd, 2008 11:07 pmTonight I took my little kids to see the local high school production of Into the Woods. Before getting there, I had no idea that this had been a Broadway play. It was very good, very funny, and very well done. I am constantly surprised at the level of talent around here, and tonight was no exception. Some of these kids can sing as well as any professional I've heard.
The play was an adaptation done by Music Theatre International who specializes in producing works transposed and edited for performances by kids. It's an excellent idea, and I'm glad it's being done and these kids get to experience performing and seeing these works. The website is incredibly vague on the royalty fees, but they can't be that much as admission was only $5 for kids and $7 for adults.
Samantha wasn't too sure about going when I first talked to her and her mom about it. Daniel was the one who insisted on going, and I told their mom that even if the play was going to suck I felt it was important to take him in order to encourage him to keep speaking up and expressing his opinion. Other than TV and dinner, he doesn't do that a lot, so I was thrilled that he was so adamant about going. Afterward, Sam said she was glad she went and wanted to so other plays. There's a lot of summer theater around her, so I'm sure we can find something age-appropriate to go see in the coming months.
