Ten things I've learned
Aug. 3rd, 2008 08:11 pm1. Taking a week off from the Internet results in a huge amount of time on my hands.
2. Six years living in one place is too long.
3. I still have too much stuff.
4. I still have way too many books.
5. When moving, having enough boxes is crucial; particularly when you have too much stuff and way too many books.
6. If you vacuum up a cinnamon jawbreaker and your vacuum cleaner is good enough, the jawbreaker will get crushed by the impeller blades and soon the entire room will smell of cinnamon. (Good luck learning that from Martha Stewart!)
7. I'm too old to be moving myself, and I am very fortunate to have a 6'3", 18 year old son who is money-motivated enough that an offer to pay and feed him was sufficient to obtain his assistance with the couch and beds and other big stuff.
8. Using an appliance dolly to move a full file cabinet in the pouring rain while wearing sneakers is a bad idea if there are stairs involved.
9. It takes 7-10 days for your mail being forwarded to catch-up to your new address, because it has to go to the most southern part of the state and sit for an indeterminable, arbitrary number of days before getting routed to your new address.
10. I now have a very nice landlord. He fixed two electrical outlets (one broken, one installed upside-down), a kitchen cabinet, agreed to replace the skudzy linoleum under the kitchen sink, plus changed the locks on his own initiative. Then he told me I didn't have to pay for rent for this last week, that we'll just start the lease as of 8/1.
