settling in

I having a very relaxing vacation. Took Sam, Dan, and 'Lyssia to the movies on Monday to see Space Chimps. It was cute and funny and not too preaching and had a couple of "adult" oriented puns to keep it interesting. There's even a David Bowie reference.

Unpacking is happening slowly but steadily. I'm trying not to simply move the stacks and piles and mess, and to not recreate the circumstances for that to happen again. Consequently I have several dozen linear feet of books not shelved as well as a dozen or so boxes of papers and stuff not unpacked. Next paycheck I'll be shopping around for a book shelf for what's not going to the library or be listed on ebay or half.com. Today I paid for a sideboard that tomorrow is going to be in my kitchen to put my microwave on. It's got two drawers which is what I also need. I've got new shelf-paper in the cupboards and dishes and coffee mugs and those sorts of things put away.

The bookshelves I do have in my living room are populated but not overly so, and not burdened with papers and double stacks of books on each shelf. My DVDs are in my TV stand with the VHS tapes neatly stacked against one of the book shelves. I still have to hang pictures and get my desk setup. I have a set of stackable plastic trays of the in & out box variety, but not really enough room on my desk for them. So I still need to come up with a more effective management systems for my bills that keeps them sorted, handy, and not just in a random stack that grows and grows and grows until it falls over.

My basement is wet. I've got a fan down there now running to dry it out; this is the second time this week I've had to do that, so it's time to do something about it. Yesterday and this morning it rained, and the run-off from the roof is enough to saturate the flowerbed on the side of the house and force the water in through the field-stone part of the foundation into the basement. I'm going to suggest to my landlord that I buy and bury a section of perforated PVC pipe about a foot under the flowerbed to divert all of the runoff out into the backyard, away from the house. He's already said if I have suggestions for improvements that I can check with him and he'll deduct whatever I spend from the next month's rent, so hopefully the most difficult part of this fix will be digging the trench.

I did get some plywood for Danny's train set, and a plastic four-shelf set from Lowe's to store stuff on in the basement. I just have to find a dry spot that's not too close to the furnace or blocking the washer and dryer for it.
