Nothing lasts for ever, especially when you've adopted the perception that something will. On the 1st of this month, AOL annouced that they are shutting down their ftp service and eliminating the free web space they give their members. And with that, the service has now become so useless for me that I'll be dropping it at the end of this month.
The biggest change is that my gmail address will now be my primary email address. I do get an e-mail account from Verizon (several, I think), but I've never used it and don't plan to. I should just drop the money and buy my own domain and get some hosting space somewhere for it. Maybe after Christmas.
This change also means that the web page I've had up since early 1997 will be taken down: http://members.aol.com/prgrmr/lincjfk.html. Yes, it's old and it looks it. I've also used my AOL ftp space to host pictures I've put on my lj. I'll need to find a new home for some of that stuff.
I have my AOL e-mail archived back through 1998. The majority of it is ebay and fantasy football stuff, but a lot of it is just the every day stuff too. The ebay stuff I hang on to as a matter of habit in case I needed to refer back to it, but the vast majority of it should go away. That'll be a couple-day project for later. And I'll be lucky if it's just a couple of days, cause I know I'll have to go back and reread most of it. I've done a lot of living in the last 10 years. Maybe this will help me let go of some of it.
