Happy Birthday Mr. Lincoln
Feb. 12th, 2009 11:37 pm200 years ago today, Abe Lincoln was born. And it didn't merit a mention in the local newspaper. In 1909, it was a big event all over the country, with the major festivities held in Springfield, Ill.. Today, Illinois and Kentucky, among other state, are holding celebrations and memorial ceremonies, as well as events all day long in Washington, D.C.
Today, the US Mint revealed the new commemorative designs that will be used on the reverse of the one cent coin throughout this year. There were four new designs selected from dozens of candidates. The original bill that was submitted in Congress to authorize the new designs also called for this to be the last year of the minting of the one cent coin, but that provision was removed before the bill went to the floor for a vote. If not by 2015, certainly by 2020 the cent will be no longer minted and probably no longer used, rendered obsolete by inflation and a short-sighted monetary policy that bases the value of our currency on nothing more than the collective perceptions of the world market that trades dollars against pounds and euros.
