complete waste of time
Apr. 9th, 2009 09:22 pmThe job fair was a no-go. I drove down this morning to the mall, but never got near it. The highway was backed-up over a mile with traffic in line for the mall exit, and it was backed-up even more on the other side of the highway. At that point I figured it would be an hour or more just to get to mall parking lot, and then an unknown wait to get on a shuttle bus, and then fight through God-only-knows-how-many people to be able to hand my resume to a headhunter who might have a job for which I'm qualified and not already applied for. So yeah, I passed. Drove right on by and continued on around the highway back north and went home.
The news tonight will be interesting. I was thinking that this was either going to be a bust, or that thousands of folks would show and they'd be unprepared for it. I never thought that the city was going to fail at basic traffic control. The road the mall is on is two lanes in both directions for several miles, with numerous turning lanes throughout. Some judicious lane rerouting and control with some strategically placed police officers would have gone a long way toward reducing the backup. I doubt they did so much as re-time the lights off of the highway to better handle the increased traffic flow.
I hope they have some sort of attendence figures to report. The unemployment rate in NH was 5.9% in February. Figures for March haven't been published yet, but I'd be shocked if it doesn't turn out to be higher.
