glad I'm not working at the hospital
Apr. 30th, 2009 11:08 pmThere are now several suspected cases of swine flu in New Hampshire, all from the hospital in Concord. It's weird seeing my former workplace as the lead story on the news, including the Boston TV stations. Some of the hype is very over-the-top--and, unfortunately, that's hardly unexpected anymore. It *may* come down to someone going to work when they knew they were getting sick, in which case I expect both the media and public reaction to be harsh.
On a brighter note, my daughter Samantha has D.A.R.E. graduation tomorrow, which I will be going to. I have mixed emotions about the program: the obvious objections to empowering 5th graders with knowledge that they may not be mature enough to be responsible about, objections to some of the blatant fear tactics that are used on the kids, and objections to the fact that a student's participation in the program will actually be presented as character evidence against them should they later get in trouble with drugs or alcohol--and as absolution for the system to address any perceived culpability that may arise. However, I also understand the need to address the issue at this age, as there are too many parents who won't, and too many dealers who will, and too many unsupervised kids who will find trouble at any age.
Her participation in this program has motivated several conversations between her and her mom, and her and I. Tomorrow will undoubtedly be a day for at least one more.
I did go down to the employment agency's office today and sign the contract for my new job. There are no guarantees of hours or over-all duration. It's completely at-will, which means it can be ended at any time. It also means that they can ask to extend it too. I did ask if the employer said anything about the chance that this may turn into a permanent gig, but there was nothing about that said. So the plan is I start work next Wednesday, and will be done sometime in June. Hopefully there will either be another contract opportunity or I will have or be well on the way to securing something full-time.
I am continuing to apply for jobs. The NPR station in Boston is looking for an Admin, and I happily applied for that. The ad specifically stated the desire for the applicant to live close to the Somerville area, so I suspect I'm almost immediately disqualified because of where I live; I'm hoping that if I have one of the stronger resumes that they may be motivated to want to talk with me anyway. Then I also found a job at the opposite end of the drive up in Rochester, NH, for an Admin job. Of course I've not heard back anything from either place, and probably won't because that's how it's been going this time and I don't thing that is going to change any time soon.
