tapped out
Aug. 25th, 2009 11:49 pmI had a very busy weekend. Too busy, actually. My kids were up in Maine visiting their grandfather last weekend. They were originally going to be back Saturday morning, but their aunt and uncle arrived, so they didn't get back until 3. So I went and got them and had them here Saturday night to make up for the lost time. This necessitated blowing off some friends at a dinner party, which was a bit more dramatic than I wanted. One of my friends has been trying to arrange a meet-up with me and one of her other friends in a semi-blind date sorta thing, and this is the third time that hasn't worked out. I'm thinking there's a sign somewhere in that to be had.
Sunday was school shopping, as was Monday because we weren't done, and I had the day off. I had take the day off to take Sam to a concert, but on Friday they rescheduled it to October. I was thinking the concert would be a fun summertime thing to do with Sam, but now they turned it into a school night inconvenience. Which reminds me, I have to call to find out why I've not gotten my refund yet.
Tonight I had set aside to go to downtown Boston to the Bell in Hand Tavern to watch Alicia Witt perform. Unfortunately, checking my bank balance this afternoon revealed that I not only somewhat over-spent this weekend, but I had missed counting a check that hadn't cleared and am basically down to gas money for the remainder of the week. So the extra miles into Boston and back and paying for parking in a garage were immediately out of the question. This is the second time I've intended to see Ms. Witt and then stepped on my own plans by not specifically setting aside the money to do so. Part of that, I think, is that I'm not good at last-minute, let alone spontaneous, planning; and, part of it is that I still have difficulty committing to going somewhere new by myself. I think I'm subconsciously sabotaging those occasions so as to not have to deal with it. Or something.
Tonight, on a whim, I looked at airfare from Boston to San Fransisco over Labor Day weekend, but couldn't find anything to fit my budget. I get paid between now and then and could have manufactured a few hundred to spend, but the cheapest round-trip I could find was over five hundred. I've never been to California, and the holiday weekend coming up is going to be the only time off I have until I go to Ohio at the end of October when my brother returns from Egypt. Maybe I'll go to Canada instead, I've not been there either.
