the Obama school video
Sep. 4th, 2009 11:47 pmI am so sick of hearing about the debate on this, the dishonest propaganda from both sides, the fear mongering and ignorance. Sometimes, I am completely embarrassed to live in the United States of America. Both Ronald Reagan and George Bush Sr. presented national speeches to school children. It was no big deal: http://www.examiner.com/x-5738-Political-Buzz-Examiner~y2009m9d4-Video-Outrage-over-Obama-school-speech-was-missing-during-Bush-and-Reagan-school-addresses
The point of fact here is that the President doesn't need special permission or parental consent to do this. The President that right under the law. They've had it ever since we (i.e. state governments) allowed the Federal Department of Education to have a say at the local level, since 1979 when President Carter proposed the department, and then signed the bill passed by Congress into law.
And it's been my observation that as soon as fear mongering starts with comparisons to Hitler, it's usually because there's no real legitimate argument. What's going on now is extremists from both political parties are selfishly and unapologetically trying to spin this to their advantage. On the one hand, it's a tempest in a teapot; and on the other, it's an abuse of authority and public trust that this country has not seen since the McCarthyism of the 1950s. With any luck, in another week this will be written off as nothing more than the dirty-politics that it is, and life will go on.
