One of car-related blogs is now postulating that minivans are so anti-establishment that they are now cool:

"Popular culture is so anti-minivan today that driving one is so counter-culture, so in the face of popular biases, so keeping-it-real, that it's almost punk rock. In a utilitarian way, anyway."

Granted, it's the Honda Odyssey that he's drooling over, and I drive a Kia Sedona. Supposedly, the Odyssey is sexier looking and, well, a Honda, so more popular. No matter. I'm more than happy with my selection. I can put all my kids in it, haul lots of stuff, and didn't have to spend as much to get that as I would have with the Honda.

The downside is that because the Sedona is so new, there's not good data available on how reliable it will be for how long. There's also not sufficient accident data for insurance companies to give it a rating more in line with it's government impact-testing scores. But, again because the Sedona is less expensive than the Odyssey, it's still costing me less to insure.

I've got 16,000 miles and change on it in 13 months of driving. The regular maintenance schedule says that the driveshaft and boots should be replaced every 15,000 miles. I am more than surprised by this. But then again, I'm no mechanic. So item number 10 on my "After I get a New Job To Do List" is get the van in for service.
