Samantha played her best game of basketball yet. She had 2 offensive rebounds and two defensive rebounds, all of which turned into assists. I lost count of the number of jumpballs she forced, it was 6 or 7. Not a bad showing for playing less than half the game. Three times she got the ball at the top-right corner of the key, and every time immediatly looked to pass it instead of shoot it. When I asked her about it, she simply said that the other girls were more open than she was. I was worried that having missed last week's game that she might have also lost some confidence, but I was completely wrong for that, as she played her boldest game yet.
Then this afternoon I took Elyssia to a birthday party for one of her classmates. It was at a Candlepin bowling lane, which is great for kids her age. Also, they have "bumpers" put in the gutters so it's even more difficult to bowl a zero in any frame. This was her first time bowling, and she had fun and finished with a very respectible 73.
Tuesday my dad is having surgery. He has problems with his kidney (yes, singular) so even though this is an outpatient procedure, it's not without risk and he'll probably stay the night. Last month they put in stents and Tuesday then plan on removing them. He's got other complicating factors, including Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura, and high blood pressure. So Tuesday at work is going to be something of a challenge for me to stay focused.
Also on Tuesday, the nursing home where my grandparents are is going to have a Valentines celebration. And they don't know it yet, but my grandparents were elected by the staff to be the King and Queen for the day. My grandfather is 91 and my grandmother is 87. He has alzheimer's, and she is dealing with complications from diabetes. He doesn't always recognizer every day, and lately has sometimes taken to seeing her as his mom. They are in seperate rooms because of their differing needs, but at least are across the hall from one another. My mom told me that this morning my grandma said she was awoken to my grandfather sitting in a chair in the hall, announcing quite loudly that he was hungry and when was breakfast. So as she was getting up to see him, he starts singing "Have I told you lately that I love you?", and when she got out there, was looking rather sheepish for having done so. He may not know her every day, but when he does, he does his best to let her know it.
