Mar. 10th, 2010 10:34 pmYesterday my youngest and I had an appointment at the eye doctor. Her pediatrician recommended that we take her, so I made the necessary arrangements, took her out of school early and off we went. I got to go first, so she could see what was going to happen. She was only marginally worried about the drops, and did well with them. As expected, the doctor said she needs glasses. Her vision isn't hardly bad at all at 20/40, but it seems she's inherited my astigmatism, and that was the bigger factor. She also favors her left eye, so he may patch it after he sees how she adjusts to the glasses to try to strengthen her right.
However, she didn't get the glasses yet. It seems her left optic nerve is slightly swollen. The doctor said that there's nothing else amiss, and there's no indication of why it's swollen, so this may be normal for her. But to be sure, he made a referral to an ophthalmologist to have it checked thoroughly. That appointment is next week, but them may be able to see her tomorrow. Once the test results are in and the two docs confab about it, then they can decide if she can proceed on to glasses or if she'll need some intervening treatment. Given that some of the underlying causes are more than dire (including brain tumor or MS), I am hoping they get her in tomorrow.
