simple things
Mar. 7th, 2010 08:55 pmMy son Brandon is home on leave, and last night I took him out for dinner. I cannot begin to describe the satisfaction at having an adult conversation with my now-adult kid. We went to Longhorn, so the food was good too.
Today I had Daniel with me, and among other things we stopped at Borders. He got a book (and by he got, I mean that he picked it, I gave him the money, and the he paid for it), and I got Programming Python. Unlike my previous Python book, this isn't a reference and contains actual working program examples, where is how I learn best. Tomorrow at lunch I will start typing them in and using them.
I happen to have cash on my at Borders and got back a penny with my change after I paid. After I got back to my house from dropping Dan off at his mom's, I emptied my pockets, and the penny ended-up on the floor. This turned out to be a good thing, as I don't think I would have looked at it otherwise. When I picked it up, I was surprised to find that it was dated 1973 "S". The surprise was in part because of the date, but mostly because it was still mostly red and in high-grade condition. I was immediately transported back to the late 1970's when I had my paper route, and spent part of my weekend going through the change I collected from my subscribers payments, looking for wheat cents and war nickels. The penny I got today doesn't look terribly different from one I would have picked out of my paper route money over 30 years ago, especially for an "S" mint. It now sits in a cardboard cent holder on my desk atop a small stack of other coins I need to eventually put in my catch-all box.
