and it's still just the weekend. I've not really gone through a real day of unemployment yet, and already I'm staring to go stir-crazy. Part of it is that my three usual weekend distractions are up in Maine with their mom and Grampy. Another part of it is I am all too painfully aware of my limited income and thus hitting any of my favorite eating establishments is strictly verboten until I have a new job.
So I spent money I shouldn't have (but nowhere near as much had I gone out) and rented some movies. In my continuing quest for more things
Parker Posey, I got
Broken English,
The Oh in Ohio, and
Dazed and Confused. I also got Sandra Bullock's latest,
Premonitions, and the Iceland and Vietnam episode of
Anthony Bourdain No Reservations.
Broken English was OK. The review on IMDB was clearly authored by someone too over-enamored with Posey (which is understandably easy to do) to be objective. Definitely a chick flick and paced accordingly. Some of the supporting acting was a bit stiff, and there were a couple of really bad lines that completely stood out. Some of that could have been compensated with better cinematography: there were a few long shots that ought to have been close-ups, and a couple of scenes that just cried out for multiple camera angles instead of just one. The movie centers completely around Posey's character of Nora Wilder, to the point were you have a believe-it-or-not sales pitch as to the reality of the supporting cast, particuarly Wilder's best friend. The ending was good, but a bit hollow. People don't resolve a lifetime of shyness and over-acceptance with one afternoon in Paris, no matter how magical or insightful it may be. But then again, I've not been to Paris, so what the hell do I know?
I'm watching "No Reservations" right now. If you've not seen it, "No Reservations" is Bourdain doing a culinary travelog. Think
Dr. House, only he's a chef not a doctor, substitute the latent issues with women for cigarettes and alcohol, and is just as snarky and sarcastic and you'll have a decent idea of what to expect.
The Iceland episode is only the second in the series, and it shows. The pacing is blah and the shots are so-so (season 3 is running now on the Travel channel and it just Rocks!). But Bourdain is good. At one point he's eating Puffin. Yeah, those cute little birds that look like they are the results of crossing a pengiun with a toucan. While he's eating it he says, "That's the problem. If you are slower than me, stupider than me, and you taste good, tough shit." (And no they don't bleep him out, so a family show this ain't.)
Tomorrow I'll watch the other two Posey movies with Sandra sandwiched in the middle. (Insert your own joke here.) I have lots of stuff to do tomorrow, so I'm sure these will get watched right away in order to avoid all that. I'm taking care of Mike's dog while he's in Maine, except that I can't have the dog here. So I go to the house 4 times a day and take him for a walk, feed him and make sure he has water. He's a great dog. He eats like a cat, which is good. You can fill his bowl up at the start of the day and, unlike most dogs, he won't suck it all down in 5 seconds, he'll eat out of it all day long. I also have to clean-up Mikes room. I'm thinking a shovel and a garbage bag. And then maybe a gallon of gas and a match once the bags hit the driveway.
But more on all of that tomorrow.
