Elyssia woke-up with a fever this morning, so she stayed home from school. And because Brandon had to go to the airport today to get to Oklahoma, I got to work from home and hang with my daughter. I called her doctor and made an appointment, which was at 2:40, and because her mom had to be home when Sam and Dan got there from school, I got to take Elyssia to the doctors. I gave him the whole back-story on her condition up through this morning, and after he examined her, he decided that this was incidental to her eye issue, just some upper-reperatory virus infection. That made me happy, as I was seriously not looking forward at all to her having to get a lumbar puncture. And he also understood that if it wasn't for what's going on in her head, I never would have bothered with the appointment at all, just fluids, tylenol, and rest, which is ultimately what he said to do.

Before any of that started this morning, my mom called and told me that my uncle passed away this morning. He'd been in the hospital nearly three weeks, most of it under sedation and on dialysis. So while this was sudden, it wasn't entirely unexpected. But certainly unwanted. He was only 64. He volunteered for Vietnam the day after he turned 100. After scoring 100% on his ASVAB, he wanted into the engineers to do E.O.D., and wasn't going to take no for an answer. He told a few stories of his 10 months over there, but the one he like the best was when he got to tell a full bird colonel that he just ran 5 clicks of cord through a particular valley and he had orders to blow it at a specific time, and if the colonel wanted to drive his regiment through there, he was damn well welcome to, just don't complain when he gets blown to hell along with Charlie.

After the service, he eventually became a fireman. I forget how long he did that, it was over 10 years. He had to stop after getting hurt on the job. He was carrying a guy in a wheelchair downstairs, and yes, during a house fire. He was going down first, backward, taking the weight, and some Probie was bringing up the rear. And Probie lost his grip. The guy, the chair, and the Probie ended up on top of my Uncle, who was very injured as a result, including nerve damage in his wrist and shoulder. I don't think his health was ever the same after that. He back definitely wasn't.

The funeral is this Saturday. Unless I can score some wicked cheap airfare tomorrow, there's no way I can make it. Driving is out of the question. I'm on-call this week (through the weekend), and while that's not a show-stopper, I need to minimize my time out.

And now it's past midnight and I'm left feeling weird. In spite of all of the above, I had a great day. Spent time with my daughter, got to see my oldest son one more time this morning before he goes back to the Army, picked-up my new glasses (I need someone to take a picture of me with them for a new facebook pic. I can't take a self-portrait worth a damn, and my crappy camera doesn't make it easier), got my haircut, spent time on the phone with a friend (who wasn't have a great day), and still managed to get a full day of work in between all of that. I almost feel guilty for having been so productive, and feeling so good about it, on a day that was so hard for so many other people.
